Major rivers of Uttar Pradesh

The Ganges (Ganga) and Yamuna are the most prominent rivers of Uttar Pradesh, the Ganges is the longest river of Uttar Pradesh. The rivers of Uttar Pradesh can be divided into three parts based on the point of origin. 

  • Rivers originating from the Himalayas – Ganga, Yamuna, Kali / Sharda, Ramganga, Ghaghra, Gandak
  • Rivers originating from plains of Uttar Pradesh – Gomti, Varuna, Pando, Isan, Rihand 
  • Rivers originating from the south plateau – Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Son, Tons, Kanhar, Rihand 

Ganga River

Origin point –  Gangotri (Uttarakhand)

End Point- Bay of Bengal 
Tributaries –  Alaknanda, Bhagirathi, Ramganga, Yamuna, Kosi, Ghaghra, Gandak, Gomti 

Yamuna River

Origin point – Yamunotri glacier of Bandarpunch mountain in Uttarakhand
Length (km)     1376
End Point –  Merges with Ganga river in Allahabad 
Tributaries –  Chambal, Betwa, Giri, Cane 

Ramganga River

Origin Point – Dudhatoli mountain of Uttarakhand
Length (km)   590
End Merges with Ganga (Ganges) near Kannauj
Ttributaries –  Koh 

Ghaghara River

Origin Point Tibet 
length (km) –  1080
End Point –   near Chapra (Bihar) in the Ganges River 
Tributaries – Rapta, Sharda, Chhoti Ghandak 

Gomati River

Origin point –   Pilibhit district of Uttar Pradesh
length (km)   940 km. 
End  – in Ganga river near Ghazipur 
Tributaries –  Jomkai, Barna, Sai, Gachha

Sharada / Kali River 

Origin point – near the Tibet border in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand

End   – in the Ghaghra river near Bahram Ghat in Uttar Pradesh
Ttributaries  –  Saryu, East Ramganga, Dahawar, Suheli, Dharaya, Lisar 

Gandak River

Origin Point Tibet-Nepal border on the Dhaulagiri mountain

End – near Patna in Ganga River

Trishuli Ganga 

Rapti River

Origin Point Nepal

End – In Ghagra river near Barhas 

Chambal River

Point of Origin –  Madhya Pradesh
