Major tribes of Uttar Pradesh
The Scheduled Tribes constitute 0.6% of the total population of Uttar Pradesh.The major scheduled tribes of Uttar Pradesh are Buxa, Tharu, Raji, Jaunsari, Kharwar, Mahigir, Gond, Ojha, Dhuria, Naik, Pathari, Rajgond, Sahariya, Pahariya, Baiga , Pankha, Agariya, Patari, Chero, Bhuiya etc.
Tharu tribe
- Tharu tribe is the largest tribe in Uttar Pradesh.
- People of Tharu tribe live in Tarai part of Gorakhpur in Uttar Pradesh
- People of Tharu tribe belong to Kirat dynasty
- A festival called Bajhar is celebrated by Tharuo . They celebrate Deepawali as a mourning festival , Khichdi dance is performed by the Tharu tribe on the occasion of Holi.
- Tharu Development Project started on 2 October 1980 in Uttar Pradesh
Jaunsari tribe
- The main festivals of Jaunsari community are Bisu (Baisakhi), Panchai (Dussehra), Diai (Diwali), Nunai, Athoi etc. They celebrate Diwali after one month.
- Their main dances are Harul, Rason, Ghumsu, Jhela, Dhei, Tandi, Maroj, Paunai etc.
Buksa or Bhoksa tribe
- In Uttar Pradesh, the Buksa tribe is found in the Bijnor district.
- The supreme person of the panchayat of the Buksa tribe is called Takhat
- The Buksa Tribe Development Project in Uttar Pradesh was started in 1983-84
Kharwar tribe
- The people of Kharwar tribe in Uttar Pradesh mainly reside in Sonbhadra district.
- Surajvanshi, Patbandhi, Daulatbandhi, Kheri, Mogati, Armia are the sub-castes of this tribe.
- Their main gods are Badhus, Vanasanti, Dulhadeva, Ghamasan, Goraiya etc.
- Kharwar tribe popular dance is Karma.
